Have you met the Wild Woman?
Hopefully regardless of how old you are, you know her and you know her well.
Perhaps you caught a faint whiff of her on a steamy hot Summer night or when a societal or cultural issue ignited your inner fire to take action on something that was important to you.
Yet far too many women are not familiar with her.
They either consciously or unconsciously feel the cultural constraints and metaphorical leash that has tried to tame and domesticate her in an attempt to control and limit her powerful energy and abilities. Yet we need her…desperately. The primal, instinctual nature that exists in all women is known as the Wild Woman archetype and it is a critical asset in helping us navigate wisely through our lives. So if you find yourself feeling overly ‘civilized’ or ‘domesticated’, out of touch with your instinctual inner compass and “fire in the belly” – basically feeling lame and far too tame – this episode is for you!
My guest today is Dr. Stacey Shelby who is an author, speaker, educator, and depth psychotherapist. She is certified clinical dream tender holds a masters and Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with a specialization in Jungian and Archetypal Studies. In this episode we tap into Dr. Shelby’s understanding and experience with the Wild Woman Archetype and what it means for all women. We also talk about love as a catalyst for true inner awakening and discuss ways we can engage with Goddess archetypes in our everyday lives.

Tend Her Wild Podcast Interview

Here is a new podcast on the Wild Woman.

Listen here: https://www.tendherwild.com/2023/10/13/87-dr-stacey-shelby-tracking-the-wild-woman-archetype/

Summary from Tend Her Wild:

Join us today as we interview Dr Stacey Shelby, an author, speaker and depth psychotherapist.  This deep conversation about understanding the wild woman archetype and how it shows up in modern western culture.
Today we discuss:
  • Dr. Stacey’s early years and her vivid imagination and connection to nature.
  • How the wild woman archetype is socialized out of us form the very beginning in western culture.
  • The effect of adolescent girls not receiving enough mirroring because adult women and mothers are still “finding themselves”.
  • How a mid-life crisis or awakening leads to a desire to be liberated and freed.
  • How patriarchy affects both men and women and how men often seem more lost than we are because there are so disconnected to their emotions.
  • That the wild woman archetype is not about divisiveness, but rather about unity.
  • How female sexuality is such a powerful force and so we often repress it.  How claiming our sexuality can be awkward because we don’t know how to wield our Aphrodite energy and power.
Stacey Shelby, Ph.D., is an author, speaker and depth psychotherapist. She is also a Registered Clinical Counselor (RCC) in Canada, a certified clinical dream tender, and she has studied in folk and yoga traditions. She holds a masters and Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with a specialization in Jungian and Archetypal Studies.
Dr. Shelby has a thriving clinical practice over Zoom, where she works with adults in various stages of personal transformation. She is gifted at working with the symbolic language of the soul and she is dedicated to honoring the soul as it presents in the lived experience of daily life.

Episode Description

I had a lively discussion with Dr. Kelli Ritter from the The Nourished Soul. We recorded the interview just as I was about to make the move to California and Kelli was waiting to be evacuated due to a hurricane! But we were able to make it work as we spoke about depth psychology, the soul and the wild woman archetype.

Episode Description

In this episode, Stacey and Shane discuss the psychology of love, relationships, suffering, flourishing, and divinity. Using the myth of Eros (love) and Psyche (soul), we explore the transcendental, archetypal energies of love as the central power of life that inspires creativity, meaning, growth, and connection.

The book Love and Soul-Making explores various relationship themes and dynamics, including love, passion, desire, beauty, sex, marriage, and the union of outer and inner reality. People in relationships are often confronted with challenges and hardships. If we willingly engage with and surrender to these hardships, we may find a roadmap to a life of authenticity, creativity, meaning and purpose. Ultimately, love and relationships are a calling from your soul to live an inspired life that is aligned with the great power/soul of the universe.

Free Podcast – Wild Woman for @Goodness

I have written a few articles in the past for @Goodness publications based in Dubai; this time I was invited for a podcast interview with editor, Noor Tehini. In addition to defining archetypes, connecting with the Wild Woman, and fostering intuition, we also touched into how patriarchy and capitalism effect women’s authenticity. It’s a privilege to share this work with all women, but so exciting for me to share it with Middle Eastern women with this interview, especially since visiting Dubai has long been on my bucket list!  (Being wild isn’t only expressed by running barefoot in the forest ;-)

Women Leading Change Podcast (free)

Here is a recent interview on the Women Leading Change Podcast with skilled interviewer and wild woman, Laureen Card.  In it we discuss the wild woman archetype, patriarchy (not men!), relationships, sexuality, and the environment. I hope you enjoy listening.

“By midlife a woman may become conscious of the ways culture has overdomesticated her, and she may have become aware of her own wild, instinctual nature. The wild woman archetype within a woman’s psyche is an expression of her innate, soulful essence. When a woman becomes conscious of the wild woman archetype, she  becomes free to explore sexuality & relationships on her own terms.”

Free podcast on Women in Depth with Lourdes Viado

I’m honoured to have been interviewed for the 100th episode of Women In Depth with Lourdes Viado!  Please copy/paste the link and hear the podcast interview for free (the Women In Depth series is also on the podcast app). It is entitled: Rediscovering the Wild Woman Archetype.

Here is one of the citations from the interview:

“[The wild woman archetype] is just one of these things that doesn’t necessarily want to be defined in a fixed and rigid role that we can hang a definition off of in a really clear way and that is part of the nature of the wild woman archetype. It just defies containment…the soul itself is just so wild and expansive, it doesn’t want to be caged in by a fixed definition. Nevertheless, we have to talk about these things and we have language and art and poetry in order to do that. So in the most simplistic form where I’ve kind of landed, it is representative of the human soul that is embodied. So different than say psyche, the Greek word for soul, it stays with the body, where psyche, in the tale of Eros and Psyche, she goes off with her wings to Olympus and Eros and she doesn’t stay in her human form, she becomes a goddess. The wild woman stays in her human form, she stays with her body. So it’s more connected to the instinctual realm and to the embodiment and the lived reality of the here and now…”

The Wild Woman Archetype Interview

A recent interview on the 2018 release of Tracking the Wild Woman Archetype.  I was interviewed by Bonnie Bright for Pacifica Graduate Institute.

Listener Letter from Shrink Rap Radio

A male listener from Tehran wrote me this touching letter after listening to my interview on shrink rap radio (listen here (or view on youtube here). His letter touched me so much that I asked his permission to reprint it, anonymously.

“Dear Dr. Shelby,

It’s such an honor to be able to contact you, after listening to your delightful interview with Dr. Van Nuys on Shrink Rap Radio.

I’m a 26 years old psychology graduate and I live in Tehran, Iran and I’m proud to say that I’m a big fan of Dr. Van Nuys and his work in Shrink Rap Radio (so far that I’ve not missed a single episode in over 6 years time!). I’ve also had the privilege to work with Dr. Dave as a volunteer in transcription. I was so moved by what I found in your talk on Shrink Rap Radio and this is just a humble attempt to convey my gratitude for what I hope I’ve learnt from you. Unfortunately, the many sanctions of over four decades imposed on Iran does not allow any financial exchange between my country and the rest of the world and this means, among other things, that I cannot purchase the books I, as a big fan of psychoanalysis, am willing to read. Alas, I’ve not yet read your book but I sincerely hope I might be able to do so sometime in the future. If you follow the news about Iran, you might know that Iran is, unfortunately, not famous for its friendly appreciation of women in general and it’s a shame to say that many women of my country suffer from te many facets of injustice and discrimination. Hence I found your interview of tremendous importance for our situation in Iran and I guess this was a contributory factor in why I was so touched and moved by your interview. It’s a pity to say that many of my friends and colleagues do not speak or comprehend English well but I’ve shared the link to your interview with many female acquaintances in various cities of Tehran and they tell me they’re trying their best in catching the most of what they can from your wisdom! One of my big dreams is to be able to translate books solely dedicated to studies contributing to women rights or any such topic, leading to emancipation necessary for the development of what you aptly call the “wild woman”. In my humble estimation, I think it’s high time we have much more wild women from the land of Scheherazade!

Sincerely yours,
Kind Soul~”
